Story
Hey everyone!
It’s my turn to do something for charity!
The opportunity came up to do a sponsored abseil 160ft down Guildford Cathedral on Saturday 5th June in aid of Crossroads Care Surrey.
I could say that I’m scared of heights which might make this a more ambitious feat, but that would be a lie. I love heights, I love abseiling, and I wanted to help raise funds for this charity because I think carers and the people they help need more support.
My granny had Alzheimer’s so my parents & I had to become carers for her, while also going to work & school. I know how emotionally and physically draining it is for people who have to become carers & look after their loved ones with illnesses like this. I wish we had known about this charity back then to relieve the strain.
Crossroads Care Surrey is the leading provider of support for private carers in the county. A ‘carer’ in this sense is someone who gives their time to look after a relative with a significant medical condition or disability. Crossroads Care provide trained staff to take over the carers’ responsibility to give them some precious time to themselves each week.
They treat each person who is cared for as an individual and try to identify activities that they can enjoy. This ranges from taking an elderly person with Alzheimer’s on a walk or taking an autistic teenager rock-climbing.
Currently the charity supports 1,500 carers in Surrey, but they still have many more people on their waiting lists. By doing this sponsored abseil, I will be raising money to go towards the funding required to help even more carers across the county.
As an enticement for donations, the event suggests that we ‘become a superhero for the day’…and dressing up is optional. I think most of you know, I love dressing up, and my outfit so far consists of some rather super silver sparkly leggings, and a superhero-esque mask!!
There will be photographic proof!!!
Please spare any pennies or pounds to go towards helping these people.
AND MOST IMPORTANTLY – make sure you ‘gift aid’, because we hate to see more tax going to the tax man, especially from a charity!
Thankyou so much in advance for your help!
