Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page.
On 25th April 2010 I will be running (or possibly crawling at the end!!) the London Marathon. As most of you know I am a bit of a running fanatic, however as I have not run a marathon before this is a completely new challenge for me, a challenge which I am very excited about but admittedly, also a little nervous about!!
I am running the marathon to raise money for the charity Deafblind UK and would be very grateful if you could sponsor me....no matter or much or how little, every little bit will help.
Deafblindness is one of the most challenging disabilities that a person can endure, and has been described as 'the loneliest condition in the world'. Most of us have at some point in our lives been asked the question 'which would you rather be - deaf or blind?' But, can you imagine being both? Can you imagine how you would do simple tasks such as make a drink or cook a meal? How would you know what time it is? How would you know what the people you loved looked and sounded like? It's hard to imagine, yet over 2.6 million people in the UK live with deafblindness.
Deafblind people often feel trapped by barriers to communication and as their condition deteriorates people lose confidence, often becoming withdrawn, isolated and totally dependent on others. Without the appropriate support, life for someone who has lost, or is losing, both their sight and hearing can be a very lonely, confusing and potentially dangerous place.
Deafblind UK was established in 1928 and is a national charity offering people living with Deafblindness practical daily living support and access to vital information. Each deafblind person is unique, and sometimes as complicated needs such as another disability, therefore a care programme can be very complex. By providing crucial support in the form of help at home, communication, mobility support and counselling together with specially adaptive equipment Deafblind UK can help deafblind people achieve their full potential, whatever that may be.
Donations and fundraising events are crucial to the work of Deafblind UK so please dig deep and donate now, in return I promise to give 100% to completing the marathon.....I better get those trainers on and get out for a run!!!
