In September 2012 I'll be undertaking a seven day trek up Kilimanjaro in aid of the 'Pancreatic Cancer Research Fund' 

Only 3% of people diagnosed with pancreatic cancer survive 5 years or more. Compared to other cancers this statistic has barely changed in 30 yrs. It has the highest death rate of all cancers. Despite this, research is underfunded compared with other types of cancers.

I work as Clinical Nurse Specialist at The University Hospital of Coventry and Warwickshire nursing people with pancreatic (also liver, stomach and gullet) cancer and I see at first hand the devasting effects this cancer has on people. Pancreatic Cancer Research Fund is the only national charity exclusively funding research into pancreatic cancer throughout the UK and therefore I think this is a really worthy charity to give to. Please help change these terrible statistics. Also by participating in this challenge I aim to raise awareness of pancreatic cancer.

On a lighter note I will be training hard over the next year, not only with fitness in mind but also in coping with more, shall we say basic facilities. For those who know me well you will know this will be my biggest challenge. I don't think I will be able to plug my hair straighteners in up the mountain!

Also over the next year I will be organising fund raising events and I will keep you posted about these. I have been really touched by the offers of help with this already and also by offers of fund raising events being put on by people on my behalf. I know with everybody's help and support I will reach the intended target and hopefully surpass it. I do need to let you know that part of the money raised does goes towards the trip but this is not a holiday it is a challenge from beginning to end and I am doing it to help the charity raise necessary funds.
