Maternal mortality is one of the leading causes of death of women of reproductive age in many parts of the world.  A woman living in sub-Saharan Africa has a 1 in 16 lifetime risk of dying in childbirth, with the highest risk being 1 in 6 in Sierra Leone and Afghanistan.  This compares to a lifetime risk of just 1 in 30 000 in Sweden.

Maternity Worldwide employs and trains medical and midwifery staff, sets up community education and women's empowerment groups and maintains a Safe Birth Fund to help those who are unable to pay for professional care during childbirth. 

The average cost of a professional delivery in the Maternity Worldwide maternity unit in Gimbie, Ethiopia is just £15.
