British 10k London Run 2008 · 6 July 2008 ·

Suzy Lamplugh Trust is the national personal safety charity and aims to help everyone in society to lead safer, more confident lives. Through advice, information, resources, training, community talks and projects, it deals with issues from walking alone at night to staying safe whilst keeping fit, from people working in vulnerable situations to children using the internet and from reducing elderly people's fear of crime to raising awareness of the dangers faced by boys and young men. It works throughout the UK to give people the information and skills they need to live their lives to the full, confidently and safely.

Story

Hello! Thank you so much for visiting my fundraising page!

I think it's fair to say, I'm not a natural runner. In fact, when I started to train for this, I could only run for 4 minutes before I had to stop and felt like I was dying. Now I still feel like I'm dying, but I manage to keep going for a bit longer!

With one week to go, I have finally managed to run 10k. It hurt. But at least in theory I can do it now. Not without the aid of Celine Dion blaring through my ipod, but we all need a prop... (I'd like to point out that I am not running through the streets of London alone with an ipod - that would not be appropriate, given the cause).

I'm partly doing this because it's a personal challenge - I never thought I would ever attempt something like this, so it's a challenge indeed! But I'm mostly doing it because I'm passionate about the cause that I work for - personal safety.

In a world where the media increasingly wants us to be afraid of the dangers of guns and knives, gangs, "hoodies", and a society generally portrayed as violent and aggressive, the Trust helps people to live their lives without fear. By offering simple steps, simple strategies to keep safe, it gives people the confidence they need to go about living their lives to the full.

Not only that, but it tackles the roots of the crime themselves. It helps to reduce the incidence of violence and aggression by working with young people in deprived areas, by facilitating community cohesion and by helping each individual to reduce the opprtunity for crime and therefore their likelihood of becoming a victim.

It's a really important charity - perhaps now, more than ever - and I'm proud to work for it. And I'm also proud to be running for it, so I hope you will support me in doing so.

Each donation will not only help the Trust in its work, but will spur me on that little bit further in my training, so every amount is gratefully received!!

THANK YOU!!

NB: Donating through this site is simple, fast and totally secure. It is also the most efficient way to sponsor me: Suzy Lamplugh Trust will receive your money faster and, if you are a UK taxpayer, an extra 28% in tax will be added to your gift at no cost to you.
