Story
Hello!
Thank you so much for visitng my JustGiving page. I am so grateful for any donation you can afford to give.
I've been involved with Amnesty International since I was at school, and have been greatly inspired by the work that they do. I think so many of us can often take for granted the fact that we have legally protected rights: freedom of speech, religious freedoms, voting rights and freedom to make our own choices. Yet around the world , many individuals' basic human rights are discarded and their lives turned upside down.
I hope that by running this distance (26.2 miles-eek!) and by fundraising for Amnesty International, I can raise awareness for (and help to contribute to) some of the brilliant work that they do.
You can browse Amnesty's Website (http://www.amnesty.org.uk/index.asp) to see what they do and why, as well as how, if you are interested, you can become involved.
Amnesty International has recently been involved with advocating for a girl whose Human Rights have been compromised in Pakistan. This case has particularly hit home with me: it was the shooting of 14 year old Malala Yousufzai.
On her way home from school, on 9th October 2012, she was shot in the head by the Taliban. Malala was targeted for being 'secular' and 'promoting Western Culture in Pashtun areas.' They tried to kill her for asserting a girl's right to simply go to school. Amnesty is calling for greater protection of human rights defenders in Pakistan. Having been able to freely attend a brilliant school and now attend a fantastic university, this story is particularly hard-hitting. It is ridiculous that I can have the priviliege of receiving a great education whilst there are still places around the world where a women's right to an education is not upheld.
I hope this run will be a way of displaying my as well as perhaps your, response to such cases: that we stand for the protection of fundamental human rights.
I'm also planning to write a 'running-blog' where you can keep up-to-date with my training - hopefully that will motivate me to stick with it!!
Thank you all again for all your encouragement and donations.
Lots of Love,
Jen
