Action Against Hunger is a global humanitarian organisation that takes decisive action against the causes and effects of hunger. We save the lives of malnourished children. We ensure everyone can access clean water, food, training and healthcare. We enable entire communities to be free from hunger.

Story

So this might sound like a bit of a rubbish challenge. Your average person doesn’t generally need a sponsorship challenge just to not eat a Krispie Kreme or two, several biscuits, just a taste (or perhaps bar) of chocolate, and –hell- a bowl of crumble a day. But anyone who’s ever been offered a French Fancy for breakfast at a festival by me, will know I’m not a normal person. My sugar-lust knows no bounds.

So in a desperate bid to stem the onset of diabetes just a little, I’ve decided to give up sugary treats for the whole of May.

Here are the rules:

I will obviously NOT be consuming: sweets, chocolate, biscuits, cookies, cakes, puddings, ice-cream, sugary cereals, breakfast biscuits (who was I trying to fool with these anyway…), hot chocolate, fizzy sugary drinks, cereal bars that have chocolate on them or are obviously a treat rather than a hardship (recommendations for particularly austere, non-delicious ones much welcomed…)

I will also not be adding extra sugar to hot drinks or meals (yes, I’ll admit: sugar in pasta sauce had become something of a norm. I’ve got probs).

I WILL however still be allowed to eat fruit and dried and canned fruit (unless in syrup), and drink your average no-added-sugar fruit juices (those of you who have suggested that eating fruit is cheating really must get out more. Or discover trifle).

I’ll admit there are still some grey areas. Peanut butter for instance… I would, without hesitation, class this as a savoury snack. But then I’m the one having to resort to a sugar-free challenge.

Anyhoo… either way it’s gonna be pretty tough. Don’t be surprised if next time you see me I’m sweating and twitching from withdrawal. I’ll keep you updated as I go along…all I ask is, to make it all worthwhile, you spare a couple of quid for Action Against Hunger.
