Story
British stormy and wet weather forced Vélo South to be cancelled, so I completed the South Downs 100 mile sportive in October. My charity place was transferred to the Prudential Ride London 100 in August 2019 and so I will continue to raise money for Alzheimer's Society.
🚲 Big Hairy Audacious Goal
Alzheimer's Society have pledged to raise £50 million to the Dementia Research Institute. Your donations will help. Help me reach £1,200 in donations and I can get some Alzheimer's Society cycling bib shorts, so I will look the part!
🚲 tl;dr
I'm raising money for a charity who support people with Alzheimer's disease and dementia. It's affected my family.
🚲 Why am I doing this?
There are many people that suffer from short-term memory loss, and worse still many that suffer from dementia and Alzheimer’s disease. This has included members of my family too. That's why I've chosen to ride and raise funds for Alzheimer's Society, and hope you can donate a few pounds for a worthy cause.
Alzheimer's disease, also referred to simply as Alzheimer's, is a chronic neurodegenerative disease that usually starts slowly and worsens over time. It is the cause of 60% to 70% of cases of dementia. The most common early symptom is difficulty in remembering recent events (short-term memory loss).
There are 850,000 people with dementia in the UK, with numbers set to rise to over 1 million by 2025. This will soar to 2 million by 2051. 225,000 will develop dementia this year, that's one every three minutes. 1 in 6 people over the age of 80 have dementia.
