Sharon, Jo and myself all work at Marie Curie Hospice, West Midlands and see every day the difference Marie Curie can make to those referred to us and their friends and families.  Sharon is the Hospice PA, Jo is the Business Development Manager and I am the Admin Supervisor.  Jodie is Sharon’s daughter and we are delighted that she has joined us for the trek (we will need some young blood to help us out and motivate us when the going gets tough up those mountains).

Lesley’s story

I joined Marie Curie a little under 2 years ago and at the time I considered whether working at a hospice would be the right thing for me.  I had many pre-conceived idea’s (like many) that it would be a place filled with sadness and a difficult environment to work in.  What I have found is completely the opposite.  It is a vibrant, engaging and positive place to be where team work shows real tangible results.  We rely heavily on the good will of others and community spirit for not only fundraising but also our ‘work force’.  We have in excess of 200 volunteers that are committed to our hospice and those we care for and whether they are serving a cup of tea and passing the time of day with patients or working in an intense and demanding environment such as reception; every role is valued and necessary to offer support and care when patients and families need it most. Being part of this team is a privilege

On a personal note, I will be 50 years young just before we trek the Rockies and when I saw that poster asking for people to take part, I just knew………….that’s the one for me!  Yes I do want to be able to say I did something amazing when I was 50, I do need to shift a fair few pounds before I go, I do need to start a fitness regime and I do want to raise as much as possible for a charity that I invest so much of ‘me’ in.  On the flip side (for those that know me this will ring very true), yes I am devastated I can’t take my hair straighteners, I am dismayed at the idea of not putting my makeup on every day and to add insult to injury it appears there is absolutely no room for a pair of killer heels in the luggage……………..what is a girl to do?  But, it’s not just about the trek.  As a team we began fundraising in September 2013 and we have already met some wonderful characters who have made our events come to life.  Our Italian night would not have been the great success it was without our very own authentic Italian waiter and ‘compare’ – Nino!  What a character, a real Italian charmer.  One of our biggest events for 2014 is The Bobcats band night on Saturday, 15th March 2014.  These guys have donated their time completely free of charge for this event and they will be travelling from all over the country to be with us.  The ‘Rockin Rev’ (as he is known) is my brother in law and a band member.  I can’t tell you how great it is going to one of their gigs and seeing everyone all kitted out, rocking away and having a great time (and boy can they dance).

Our team just keeps getting bigger!  It’s about the staff, the volunteers, the fundraisers, those undertaking challenges and all those supporting it and it is about those that need our help, the patients, their families, their friends and those they love.

If you have made a donation on this page or supported us with your time and talents, welcome to our team!
