Story

From skydiving through to abseiling, travelling the world and rocking the **** out, people have completely forgotten about the true meaning of charity; doing something entirely miserable.

I'm thinking hungerstrike, a sponsored swim, a trip to a gulag, or completing a challenge from the Saw movie franchise.

The other problem is the Just Giving model, where the money is immediately pledged without someone like me having to proved I did anything.

I'm going to ****ing raise some goddamn money by holding up a mirror to this sham of modern day charitable giving.

So this weekend is the launch of one of the most gruelling charitable undertakings I have ever done. I'm pretty nervous, but with your support I think I can make it through. This weekend I pledge to do the following:

Friday Night:
Return from work, triumphant after tending to all client needs *COMPLETE*
Get some dinner - pizza? steak and chips? *COMPLETE*
Play some Journey - PS3 not that awful band-that-no-one-remembered-until-Glee-used-it-and-then-everyone-loved-it *COMPLETE*
Drink gin *COMPLETE*

Friday Update:
The generosity shown so far is truly incredible!

Saturday:
Take the dog to the vet *COMPLETE*
Receive the Waitrose delivery *COMPLETE*
Pwn some noobs on Battlefield 3 *COMPLETE*
Do light, real light, housework and/or DIY *COMPLETE*

Saturday Update:
THANKS FOR ALL THE DONATIONS!

---------------------------------------------

Sunday:
Take the dog for a walk with Wynn *COMPLETE*
Pop into a cafe *COMPLETE*
Get lunch *COMPLETE*
Relax on couch *COMPLETE*

Sunday Update:
WOW! Amazing!!! Your donations have helped me through the darkest hour to emerge triumphant!

You may think that only Hercules could have a hope of scaling these heights but with the $$$ rolling in each task will be faced with renewed vigour!

You may also think that this is entirely idiotic and I'm being a dick especially to those that do amazing things for charity but the ends really do justify the means. Charity is the only beneficiary whether you're running a marathon or climbing a mountain, whether you tell a heart-rending story of loss or are raking up headshots on video games.

Thanks to the Just Giving model, no one has to prove they do the task they are raising money for either.

Then there is the fact lots of people do charity simply to look good to others or bolster their CV, and there are those that sponsor people based on friendship rather then looking into whether the charity is well-run, efficient with its donations.

But enough waffle, if you don't donate, you clearly wish the suffering of people with this debilitating disease to continue. You also want the families of sufferers to continue to watch their loved ones slip from their mortal coil, slowly and without hope. <--- Blackmail much?! You bet, how else am I going to reach this target?!?

Remember this, most charity has a healthy does of self-interest, and I'm no different. My family has long suffered from this disease and it looks like I've got 40 years left before I start looking at my daughter and calling her my wife.

I'll be posting the accomplished tasks on http://pinterest.com/jmewhyte/ and if you want to challenge me to a task for a donation, I'll do that too.

Please share and let's hit that target together!

At Alzheimer’s Society we’re working towards a world where dementia no longer devastates lives. We do this by giving help to those living with dementia today, and providing hope for the future by campaigning to make dementia the priority it should be and funding groundbreaking research.
