Royal Parks Half Marathon 2009 · 11 October 2009 ·

Massive habitat loss over the past 100 years has wiped out 50% of Asia's wild elephant population, along with the vital ecosystems they used to support. Elephant Family exists to save this iconic animal from extinction by securing vital habitat and reducing conflict with local communities.

Story

Thanks for taking the time to visit Jo and Katherine's JustGiving page.

We are both running the London Parks 1/2 marathon on the 11th October 2009 for the Elephant Family charity.

The elephant family is the UK’s only charity dedicated to saving this highly endangered species from extinction in the wild and abuse in captivity. A strong and focused force for the Asian elephant, we have raised over £2 million for key conservation projects throughout Asia – but we need your help to raise the many millions needed to ensure this incredible animal has a secure future.

Today, elephant family supports 8 projects across India, Indonesia, Malaysia and Thailand. Habitat loss is the number one threat to the Asian elephant in all of these countries, making habitat conservation an area of vital importance. elephant family works to restore the ancient migratory routes of the Asian elephant which have been lost to human development. By re-connecting fragments of forests, the wide-ranging Asian elephant is able to safely migrate, access food sources and establish crucial genetic links between herds - without endangering local communities. Wildlife corridors offer one of the best long term solutions facing the endangered wild Asian elephant.

Thank-you so much for your support!
