Three Peaks Challenge · 19 March 2009

EVERY 90 SECONDS someone in the UK is admitted to hospital with an acquired brain injury (ABI). There are many possible causes, such as a fall, a road traffic accident, an assault, a tumour or a stroke. A brain injury can happen to anyone, at any time. When it does, we're here to help

Story

Hi Folks,

The challenge is to climb the three highest peaks in the UK (Ben Nevis, Scafell Pike, and Snowdon) within 24 hours.  The minimum sponsorship to be raised is £850 but £640 has to be sent to the charity by the 24th April in order for me to take part in the challenge so dig deep guys!

The charity that I am donating to is Headway  - the brain injury association.   Headway is charity set up to give help and support to people affected by brain injury.  It does this in a number of ways:

A network of local Groups and Branches throughout the UK offers a wide range of services, including rehabilitation programmes, carer support, social re-integration, community outreach and respite care. The services available will vary, depending on local needs and resources.

Headway UK provides support to the local Groups and Branches and helps to deliver high quality services through guidance on policies, procedures, standards and training.

Eighteen years ago my father sustained a traumatic brain injury due to a road traffic accident, and as a result has permanent damage to his frontal lobes.  As a consequence he suffered a complete change in personality, and could no longer interact with family and friends in the way in which he used to.  Following his brain injury he displayed explosive anger and irritability, and became impulsive and socially disinhibited, which meant he could never work again.  He now experiences high levels of social isolation as very few people can manage his challenging behaviour.  Furthermore, as his accident did not result in any physical problems it is not always clear to individuals that he has a brain injury, which impacts upon how they respond to his behaviour.

I have decided to take part in the Three Peaks Challenge as a result of my personal experience with brain injury, but also to raise awareness of the impact of brain injury on the individual and their families.  Headway provides much needed advice and support to families who struggle to cope with the extreme changes in family circumstances.  So please folks give as much as you can, all donations are greatly welcomed.
