Due to a revolution in Libya the 2011 was cancelled as it was thought the risk was to high to continue. All runners are waiting to hear if it will be reinstated for 2012 (unlikely) or 2013 (more likely).Stay tuned for futher details and thanks for all the support shown so far.
The Libyan challenge is a 136 mile (215km) run across one of the world's greatest desert wildernesses. Runners are self supporting and self-navigate the whole route. The time limit to complete this grueling event is 75 hours.
In taking part in this event I aim to raise as much money and awareness as possible for the UK charity, Campaign to Protect Rural England (CPRE).
The Libyan challenge appealed to me due to all runners having to carry their own equipment and being required to navigate across the desert, even with a wrist mounted GPS not an easy task.
I have completed many endurance events over the years and always get a great feeling of satisfaction having not only completed the challenge but also raising awareness and funds for worthwhile causes. The level of training required for these events is also an excellent way to stay on top of my fitness year round, whatever the weather.
I'm well into training for this event and feel confident I'll achieve the distance within the allotted 75 hours. Running across desert dunes is a new one for me and should prove interesting!
I chose fundraising for the CPRE as they are committed to protecting and enhancing our country side. This organization is now into its 80 year, is presided by Bill Bryson and really has produced some amazing results. Their web site is linked to this page so please take a look.
The expansion of towns and the resultant impact on neighboring flora and fauna is severely damaging. The CPRE campaigns to stop or limit this damage.
In addition to conservation the CPRE also work hard to preserve our rural way of life including support of the agricultural sector.
I’m a huge fan of the country and can think of nothing more rewarding that a Sunday morning stroll across our green fields. The thought of a new housing estate or industrial site encroaching upon this is not a pleasant one but is an increasing reality.
I am more than happy to run across the desert in aid of the CPRE and hope that you will support them too by donating to this worthy cause.
Thank you for taking the time to read this and please take a minute to look at the CPRE website.
