My story

After a two year break, my wife and kids have allowed me to come up with another extreme challenge for a very deserving charity.

My aim is to raise £10,000 for Mencap, the UK’s leading charity for people with learning disabilities and their families.

Unfortunately, everyone I have spoken to has insisted my challenge is harder than the last so after much planning and research, here it is:

The challenge is to run 4 of the toughest ultra marathons, on 4 continents inside 12 months, totalling more than 850kms. Here’s the plan:

October 2009 – Asia - Himalayan 100 Mile Stage Race – day 1 alone has 10,000 ft of altitude gain – i.e. uphill! My altitude training will largely consist of running on the beach.

March 2010 -  Africa - Marathon de Sables – 240kms in the desert over 7 days with daily temperatures in excess of 45 degrees centigrade, self sufficient (carrying all food and equipment).

July 2010 – Europe – Al Andalus Ultra trail in Spain – 250kms in 5 days again apparently with temperatures as high as 45 degrees, self sufficient.

October 2010 – South America – Jungle Marathon – 200kms in the Amazon rainforest in 6 days, self sufficient. Day 1 includes wading through a chest high river full of leaches – which is apparently the last time you run in dry kit!

Given I’m not that keen on creepy crawlies, apparently the last one could be the straw...

I will personally be covering the cost of event entry and travel meaning all the funds I raise, will be going directly to Mencap.

I know times are hard at the moment, but please dig deep – its times like these charities need our help the most.

Thanks so much for your support.

Cheers, Joe.
