As I'm reaching the big 50 this year, I thought I'd put my body through its paces and seek a challenge I wouldn't forget. So, inspired by a friend who was about to run the London Marathon at 50 I had the lightbulb moment of a cycle ride from John O'Groats to Lands End. Not having cycled any great distance I took small steps, bought a bike, a helmet and some Lycra ( you know what they say about men in their 40's and Lycra!) and started to pedal.
The next step was to find some companions for the journey. First port of call was Neil, long time friend and regular action man, having completed numerous challenges of bike rides, and extreme walks including a 250 mile coast to coast walk in Scotland. Secondly, my good friend Royston and regular Mr Fix It who agreed to provide transport and mechanical support for the journey. So, 3 men, 2 bikes and a Camper Van came to fruition and our journey will start on September 7th with Neil and I cycling from John O,'Groats, finishing in Lands End on 21st September, a total of just over 1,000 miles.
Given the significance of the challenge we want to take the opportunity to raise some money for Breakthrough Breast Cancer in memory of my sister in law Nicola, who was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2005. Sadly, Nicola lost her battle with the disease in 2008, aged 39. Nicola was a remarkable woman, who retained hope, and a smile on her face, throughout. Keen to raise funds to find a cure for breast cancer,in her own words and taken from her own Just Giving web page when planning to do the Moonwalk in 2008, she wrote;
" please support us by donating as little or as much as you can afford to help to raise the profile of breast cancer and of course the money it takes to fund research for a cure, which, hopefully will be found in my lifetime".
Sadly, this wasn't to be the case for Nicola, but for the thousands of women diagnosed each year this could be the case. So, please dig deep and donate now.
For every £25 we raise this will buy 350 Microscope Slides - equipment vital for life saving work. For every £50 we raise this will pay for more than 1,000 touch, look,check mini guides helping women to be more aware of the warning signs of breast cancer. And, for every £100 we raise this could pay for enough specialist chemicals to enable a Breakthrough Scientist to carry out their research in two days.
