Why have I chosen to support The Afghan Reading Project? I read recently about the appalling illiteracy rate in Afghanistan: about 90% of women and 80% of men cannot even write their names. Helping to improve literacy there will not only help the Afghan people who have suffered, and are still suffering, so much, but in the long term may help us all to live in a more peaceful, moderate world. The books provided by ARP are written by Afghan writers and produced in Afghanistan. So they are culturally appropriate and provide some income and encouragement for Afghans too.
Donating through Justgiving is quick, easy and apparently totally secure. It’s also an efficient way to donate: Afghan Reading Project gets your money quickly and, if you’re a UK taxpayer, Justgiving makes sure 25% in Gift Aid, plus a 3% supplement, are added to your donation. (Justgiving does take a small cut however - read the Terms of Service at the bottom of the page for details). If you prefer, send a cheque directly to me or ARP.
