Barclays Wheels for Change 2016 · 9 September 2016 ·

The King’s Trust supports 11 to 30 year-olds who are unemployed or struggling at school to get their lives on track. Many of the young people we support are in or leaving care, have been in trouble with the law, or they are facing challenges such as homelessness or mental health issues.

Story

Now in it's fifth edition, Wheels for Change raises funds to support young people develop skills which will give them a greater opportunity to succeed in education and employment. To date, Wheels for Change has raised £1.3m and this year we are supporting the fantastic work of The Prince's Trust again.

As well as completing the 100km cycle which starts and ends at the Olympic Velodrome, I am also part of the small team organising this colleague led event. This year we hope to have c.400 participants and raise £300,000.

Okay, so as my friends will well know, the distance is not a challenge for me but the cause is very worthwhile and, as usual, I will build some ridiculous practice cycles into my preparations.  Previous iterations have included:

  • A 24hour non-stop cycle north from London (ended up in Doncaster)
  • Cycling the equivalent of London to Uganda (where one of the beneficiaries lived)
  • London to Cardiff City stadium (where I hosted a ride) in a day
  • Re-tracing the route of my great-granddad's World War 1 journey from Salisbury all around north-east France and western Belgium

I really appreciate your support, as will the young people who benefit from the training and opportunities supported by The Prince's Trust.
