Alzheimer's Concern Ealing is a local organisation that provides emotional support and practical services to meet the changing needs of people with dementia and their carers.
Now that the marathon is over, I am grateful that people are continuing to give, so that I have now raised over £2000 and hope to raise more.
It was certainly a wonderful experience to take part, with onlookers cheering me all the way with "Come on John!" and comments like "Only twenty miles to go dad. You can do it!". I was certainly pleased to finish the 26 miles, far from last, in 8 hours 12 minutes and to collect my medal. This was a happy conclusion to the pleasure of practising the route, getting to know parts of London that I had not known before and meeting people, like the Vietnam war veteran who regularly comes over to London to take part. Afterwards I was wheeled off in style, in a rickshaw round Trafalgar Square, for refreshments at the Civil Service Club.
I have also been heartened by the support for my cause and ask you to think if there is someone else you know who might be willing to give to Alzheimer's Concern. Many of you who have given are aware of the impact of dementia or Alzheimer's upon friends or members of their family which has added to the sense of a common bond of interest.
So once again, thank you everyone. It has all been very well worthwhile.
