Story
THE 15 WELSH MUNROS IN 1 DAY!!!
What is a
Munro? It's any mountain over 3000 feet, and there are 15 in Wales. I
am planning to climb all of them in 1 day, a journey that is 30 miles
long and involves over 20000 ft of ascent and descent. This is
recognised as one of the most challenging endurance tests in the UK. I
did it 20 years ago, and failed to finish 10 years ago. I will be accompanied by Nick Denison, Chairman of the
Charity. We will start from Pen Y Pass at 4 a.m. on 19th June 2010,
climbing straight up to the infamous Crib Goch ridge for sunrise, then
on to Snowdon. The other peaks we will summit will include
Y Garn, Tryfan, Carnedd Dafydd and finally Foel Fras, finishing
at 9.30 p.m. as the sun sets.
Why do this to myself again?
I
have been involved as an architect on a voluntary basis for some years
with the Mary and Margaret Charity, which cares for the Chapel and
Almshouses off Magdalene Street, Glastonbury, a much-loved group of
buildings and courtyard garden dating back to the 12th Century which is
in a dire state of disrepair. The Charity wants to restore the
buildings, to ensure their long-term survival, and to improve the
setting and visitor facilities. The overall cost will be well in excess
of £100k.
However the money I am hoping to raise with this walk is specifically to make up the shortfall required for the first phase - to mend and restore these beautiful buildings - which will start this year.
The Almshouses were built in the
15th Century within the walls of a 'Hospital', itself a 12th Century
building tied to Glastonbury Abbey. These buildings housed the 'retired
men' from the Abbey - the last occupant left in the 1950s! The restored
Almshouses will house an Iconography Exhibition Centre, the only one in
the UK, and a recreation of one of the original tiny interiors.
The Chapel and garden are used by many for quiet reflection and worship, from many faiths, or none.
I really hope you are able to help towards this labour of love.
