Ever heard of the Paris - Dakar rally? Fast, expensive cars and highly paid professional rally drivers seeing who can make it through West Africa in the fastest possible time - a trip of speed, excess and money.
As neither of us are world famous rally drivers, - we have decided to do a similar, but different challenge.
The Plymouth - Banjul rally is a charity event involving 150 brave souls, driving second hand (or more) cars 4000 miles from Plymouth to The Gambia (via sand dunes, minefields and several notorious border crossings).
We will be attempting this journey in a car featuring:
- 150,000 miles on the clock;
- no 4x4 (I'm sure the desert will be fine);
- a large hole in the exhaust (for that 'sporty' sound)
- the compulsory 'go-faster' stripes;
- a Haynes manual and a hammer (for 'repairs').
When (or - more accurately - if) we arrive in Banjul, the cars will be auctioned off to local people, with the proceeds raised going to local charities.
In addition to auctioning the car we would like to raise a bit extra for Cancer Research.
