Salford Triathlon 2013 · 18 August 2013

St Helens Carers Centre provides a range of services to Adult & Young Carers. Our local Centre is a one-stop shop for Carers, in which they can obtain emotional support, information and advice and access services to support them or give them a break from their caring role.

Story

Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page.

My daughter Alissya has cerebral palsy, due to the decreasing health of my mother in law and the increasing demands of Alissya's disability as she grows and being completely exhausted after being at school, it became necessary for my partner to take over as her carer.  This meant a huge change for my partner, who has always worked and studied from leaving school to build a successful career.  During this massive period of change for our family, this centre has been a crucial support, with advice and updates by phone and email, being a listening ear, providing encouragement and generally providing her with much needed recognition, acknowledging  her new role, making her realise she still counts.

In July 2012 whilst celebrating my friends wedding, I drunkenly suggested a group of us do a Olympic distance triathlon. I always knew if I was to participate in this challenge it would take a lot of training and I wanted to complete it for a charity close to my family's heart. Since August 2012 I have been training with the bike and runs, as I knew these would be the disciplines I would need more work on (especially running). The training led me to complete my first 10k run back in March 2013 in my local town of St Helens. I have obtained my first wet suit and trisuit and believe me, they are a tight fit for this ex-amateur rugby league player (Photos will be posted as long as my targets are hit). I am signed up for the Marbury Park 2013 sprint triathlon on 9th June 2013, which will finally lead to my main goal on Sunday 18th August 2013 where I will hopefully complete the Olympic Distance Triathlon at Salford. It will comprise of 1500m swim, 40km bike and finish with 10km run (Maybe a jelly leg jog for me).

Please, please, please donate, for me this is a massive challenge for me. My family have been a massive support through the training and for those who have met Alissya will know how much of a individual she is and does not allow her disability to prevent her from doing what she wants, due to all the help and support we receive. I have not set any time to hit yet, that will come next year. After a couple of years of the training and events I do aim to compete in a ironman event.
