Kilimanjaro! · 12 September 2010

We fundraise to buy equipment, fund major projects, desensitise the medical environment and buying a new ambulance for the Children's Intensive Care Unit at Southampton University Hospital. Caring for critically ill children from across the south of England and the Channel Islands.

Story

So we did it! Six days of hiking, and one painful 15 hour summit day. Here are our photos. Three fellow climbers also blogged their experiences with us: here are the links to Russ, Simon, and David's diaries. Thanks to everyone who donated - we really appreciate your support.

We're looking to raise some money! Two of us are making an attempt at Kilimanjaro on 12 September -- a mission to scale the tallest free-standing mountain in the world. It's a 50 mile hike, ascending to nearly 20,000 feet. That's 40% higher than Europe's tallest, Mont Blanc! And Kili's a volcano to boot.

The charity is PICU, which is one of the UK's most serious special child care units. My nephew, Henry, was born critically ill. Without them he may not be here today. PICU is supported by donations, and they are looking to expand facilities from 10 to 11 beds and add vitally important ambulances.

When Henry was born his lungs didn't work and he got septicaemia. Doctors had to rush him up to PICU on a life support machine. It took two hours just to move him from the ward in Dorchester into the ambulance, and they weren't sure whether he would make the journey to Southampton. Thanks to the great team at PICU, he's still here, and he is doing fine. (Some pictures in the box on the left).

The target is now £2,000. Every penny goes towards the charity as we're funding the expedition out of our personal expense. It would be great if you could help us out -- it's for a good cause! Thanks.
