The Joe Gilligan Trust 3 Peaks Challenge · 27 May 2011

The burden of a cancer diagnosis in your teens or early twenties is particularly distressing. By working in partnership with our wonderful associates and fundraisers we hope in some way, to make this very frightening experience a little easier.

Story

<p>Over the last bank holiday weekend in May, we shall be embarking upon the 3 Peaks Challenge in order to raise money for the charity set up in my Brother's name;<span style="color: #0000ff;">&nbsp;</span></p> <p><span style="color: #0000ff;">THE <span style="color: #999999;">JOE </span>GILLIGAN <span style="color: #999999;">TRUST</span>.</span></p> <p>The Challenge will commence on Saturday 27th May, 12:00pm at Ben Nevis in Fort William. We will then continue down to the Lakes to tackle Scafell Pike (in the dark!). The 3rd and final Peak will be Snowdon where we will conclude our Challenge, hopefully by 12:00pm on Sunday 28th May thus completing the 3 Peak Challenge in 24 hours!</p> <p><span style="color: #0000ff;"><span style="color: #999999;">ABOUT</span> THE<span style="color: #999999;"> JOE </span>GILLIGAN <span style="color: #999999;">TRUST</span></span>...</p> <p><strong><span style="font-family: Arial,Helvetica,Geneva,Sans-serif; color: #909090;">Joe&rsquo;s illness</span></strong></p> <div id="LayoutRegion8LYR"> <div id="Text16LYR" class="TextObject"> <p style="text-align: left; margin-bottom: 0px;"><span style="font-family: Arial,Helvetica,Geneva,Sans-serif; color: #636363;"><strong><span style="font-size: 12px;">Pineal Germ&nbsp; Cell Tumour (Teratoma)<br /></span></strong><span style="font-size: 12px;">Joe was diagnosed with a <em>Pineal Germ Cell Tumour (Teratoma)</em> on March 17th 2008. The tumour&nbsp; secreted Alpa feta Protein which was elevated. He was admitted to the&nbsp; Queen Elizabeth Hospital Young Persons Unit in Birmingham for treatment.&nbsp; He had Brain Surgery - Endoscopic third ventriculoscopy to alleviate&nbsp; his main symptom which was headaches caused by <a href="http://www.google.co.uk/search?hl=en&amp;sa=X&amp;oi=spell&amp;resnum=0&amp;ct=result&amp;cd=1&amp;q=%EF%83%98%09Endoscopic+third+ventriculoscopy+to+alleviate+Hydrocephalus&amp;spell=1" target="_blank">Hydrocephalus</a>.&nbsp; He then had extensive Chemotherapy and Radiotherapy.<br /><br />We are not medical experts&nbsp; but we do have first hand experience of this illness, which we understand&nbsp; to be a malignancy (Cancer) mainly found in younger people. After Joe&rsquo;s&nbsp; initial diagnosis we found it very difficult to find support groups&nbsp; or other parents in a similar dilemma. Most of the research, funding,&nbsp; trials etc seem to be aimed at the more common Cancers.&nbsp;</span></span><span style="font-family: Arial,Helvetica,Geneva,Sans-serif; font-size: 12px; color: #909090;"><a href="mailto:craig.gilligan@tesco.net"></a></span></p> <p style="text-align: left; margin-bottom: 0px;"><span style="font-family: Arial,Helvetica,Geneva,Sans-serif; font-size: 12px; color: #636363;">The Joe Gilligan Trust was set up in late 2009 and exists to support and improve the lives of teenagers and young adults fighting with Cancer.<br />As Joe was a drummer, the trust will also provide support for young musicians.</span></p> </div> </div> <p><strong><span style="font-family: Arial,Helvetica,Geneva,Sans-serif; font-size: 12px; color: #000000;">http://www.joegilligantrust.com/<br /></span></strong></p> <p><span style="font-family: Arial,Helvetica,Geneva,Sans-serif; font-size: 12px; color: #636363;">&nbsp;</span></p> <p>&nbsp;</p> <p>Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page.</p> <p>Donating through JustGiving is simple, fast and totally secure.
