Hadrian's Wall Cycle · 19 April 2009

We are the official charity of NHS Lothian, supporting all its work, all its staff and all the patients and families it cares for. From the everyday to the transformational, from birth to end of life care, we’re here to help everyone give something back to move health forward.

Story

What happened to you?
Out of the blue, I was diagnosed with last stage kidney failure in January 2007 when, bizarrely, I went to A&E after the quad tendons in both my legs ruptured at the knees.  BUT I was lucky - I had my knees repaired (had leg braces and crutches for a few weeks, but could have been worse); was on dialysis for 8 months (not a picnic); and received a kidney from my mum in August 2007 (wey hey).

What are you going to do?
Cycle from
Luguvallium (Carlisle) to Segedunum Fort (Wallsend) in 3 days (around 80 miles), from Saturday 23 May to Monday 25 May.  The route will follow the Hadrian's Wall cycle route and Roman Road as much as possible.

Erm, how will I know you have completed it?
I have some friends who are cyling all or part of the way with me.  They won't let me away with a trick; and there will be photos of me reaching various stages on the route.

Why 3 days?
The knees!

What are you raising money for?
The Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh's Medical Renal Unit Fund and Renal Transplant Unit Fund.  The easiest way to donate to them is through the Lothian Health Board Endowment Fund, but they will ensure the money gets to the two funds.

Why those funds?
Without those two units I wouldn't be able to do the cycle.  But also, to help those, like me, who have severe kidney problems and need or have had a transplant.  Both funds are used for patient support, equipment and vital research.

What do I get for sponsoring you?
My eternal thanks...and knowing that you have done something to help people get through a very difficult time in their lives.
