Thanks for visiting my fundraising page.
On the 4th of October 2008, I will be swimming 1 mile every hour......for 12 hours, starting at 7pm and finishing at 7am on October 5th. I am trying to raise money for Action Duchenne and would really welcome your support.
Duchenne muscular dystrophy is a genetic disorder caused by an error in the dystrophin gene. The condition causes progressive muscle weakness as the muscle cells break down and die.
Symptoms usually appear before age 6 and may appear as early as infancy. By age 10, those children often require braces to aide in walking but most patients are wheelchair dependent by age 12. Due to progressive deterioration of muscle, loss of movement occurs eventually leading to paralysis. Eventually, Duchenne muscular dystrophy affects all voluntary muscles, including the heart and breathing muscles.
