Story

Hello good people,

Thank you for making it to my JustGiving page.

This August I have signed myself up to partake in a week-long hike in Iceland. I will join many other walkers, covering a distance of over 100km, all with the main aim of raising a whole bunch of money for Macmillan Cancer Support. I do not want go on about how hard/cold/tiring it is going to be, mainly as i am in denial, but if you are interested please have a look at the itinerary for more information.

To find out a little bit more about the myriad ways in which Macmillan help so many people please have a look at their website. They explain themselves better than I ever could, and just a quick look is inspiration enough to support them in their work. The tragic thing is that most people already know so much about Macmillan, not only because of the passionate and dedicated fundraising of thousands who already know that it is a worthy cause, but because they have experienced their care and support first-hand. With 1 in 3 of us affected by cancer it is impossible to ignore the phenomenal work Macmillan is doing.

My family owe a great deal to Macmillan, for all they have done for us over the past years. It is time to attempt to pay them back a little. A few years ago my Mum, Teresa, fearlessly fought breast cancer and, given the all clear, the horrors seemed to be well and truly behind us. Quite out of the blue, everything started to go backwards; Mum was diagnosed last year with secondary cancer. Somehow the thing had managed to make its way to her liver, this time working with extra efficiency in its dastardly ways. Brave to the very end, my Mum was beaten this time and died with her family so very closely around her in August 2008, a couple of days before her 49th birthday.

Throughout our childhoods we had spoken often with Mum about her desire to visit Iceland. Not a person of many lofty ambitions, these conversations always stood out vividly. In a way, I always imagined she would get the chance. For this reason it is important for me to take part in this particular challenge - a pilgrimage in honour of her memory, and a fulfilment of one of her dreams.

The following bit is real important so please read carefully:
Donating through Justgiving is quick, easy and totally secure. It’s also the most efficient way to sponsor me. Macmillan Cancer Support gets your money faster and, if you’re a UK taxpayer, Justgiving makes sure 25% in Gift Aid, plus a 3% supplement, are added to your donation.

A massive thank you, to all of you, for your tireless support,

from Julian
and all the Ellerby and Finnigan family.
