Story

April 2015 - now:

I have decided to make #ThePaperCycle not just a one off fund drive but a continuing project because global literacy is an incredibly important cause.

I continue to post pictures of my origamis on my Instagram (instagram.com/julianlipyi) so I thought why not still give them away for donations for The Book Bus.

How it will work: Starting today (22 April 2015), the origamis I post will be up for conversion into books through #ThePaperCycle. So if you see an origami you like on Instagram, just donate any amount here and I will snail mail you the origami with a special note as a thank you. The first person to donate will be the lucky one who receives the origami. But if you are not the first, you could still donate to a great cause and I will still be very thankful! :)

Thank you for visiting my fundraising page and thank you so much in advance for your generosity. :)

Julian

June 2014 - Nov 2014:

A year ago, I joined Instagram under @julianlipyi. I came up with a project that I called “Project 365: Origami” where I would make a unique origami a day, for an entire year. In 2 months, I had gained 1000 followers and this project has continued to grow from strength to strength, connecting me to so many amazing people from around the world.

I want to turn this project into a force for good, to spread love, happiness and kindness to everybody, especially to those in need. So, as I approach the end of “Project 365: Origami”, I want to start a new project called #ThePaperCycle.

#ThePaperCycle is a project where I turn my origami (paper) into money (paper) for books (paper).

How am I doing this? I am fundraising for The Book Bus! The Book Bus is a registered UK charity that works to improve literacy and education in Malawi, Zambia and Ecuador by providing mobile libraries and books to underprivileged children.

Why am I doing this? It’s because education is in my opinion the most powerful tool to help cure most of what is wrong in our world – inequality, bigotry, poverty etc – and education starts with knowing how to read. I have been lucky enough to receive the education that I have, but many children aren’t so lucky.

One in six around the world have come through childhood unable to read and write because of a lack of books and opportunity to read. So if you can read this message, you’re one of the lucky people. :)

If you’ve enjoyed my #Project365 #Origami so far and if it has brought a smile to your face at any point in this year, please consider donating to this cause and help improve the lives of so many kids who need it.

You can help in several ways :)

  1. Donate – any amount, whether big or small, can and will make a difference to the lives of these kids. I will send you an origami from #Project365 #Origami as a token of my appreciation.
  2. Help raise money with me – Make an origami, tag it with #ThePaperCycle on Instagram/Facebook/Twitter along with the link to this fundraising page asking for donations (http://www.justgiving.com/julianlipyi).
  3. Come out and support - At the end of #Project365 #Origami, I will be going to the streets of Cambridge, UK and giving away my origami models in exchange for donations for The Book Bus. Come out, donate and get an origami from my project for free!

Thank you so much for taking the time to read this. I hope you will help #ThePaperCycle reach our goal of £1000, which I know is completely achievable because you guys are all so awesome! Keep spreading love and joy through origami!

It’s a well-known fact that poverty stems from lack of education. Literacy rates in sub-Saharan Africa are as low as 15% which means that education for many children is just not happening. The Book Bus gets children reading so they can climb onto the learning ladder and improve their chances in life
