I made it! I still can't quite find the words to describe the last ten days, but I can say it was without doubt the most mentally, emotionally and physically challenging thing I have ever done.
Cycling the 500km across Costa Rica in 7 days was the easy part. The average daily routine was a 5am alarm call and on the road cycling by 6.30am, arriving into camp just before it got dark at 5.30pm.
I cycled through rivers, across rickety railway bridges, dodged trains coming down the track, through banana plantations and along mountain tracks that even the experienced mountain bikers said were technically challenging. We had torrential downpours flooding the roads one minute, and were cycling in 42' heat the next.
As a team there were over 60 punctures, numerous broken derailers and bikes beyond repair. A broken collar bone, a broken rib, and stitches in knees by torch light.
I went barely knowing my 35 colleagues and have returned knowing them better than many people I have known for years. The cameraderie of the team is what got us all through. The sleep deprivation, the beyond basic living conditions (showering in the street and 2 toilets between us that didn't work), being locked in our compound one night for our own safety.
But, despite all that, it was an experience I will never forget. Amazing sights and sounds, seeing the real Costa Rica and a fantastic sense of achievement when we arrived at the beach on the east coast.
As a team of 35 we raised £250k for the Alzheimer's Society. A huge big thank you to you all for supporting me.
