A-CET works in Mekelle in Tigray in northern . This was the centre of the 1984/85 which Michael Buerk brought to our television screens and which Bob Geldof followed up with Band Aid and then Live Aid.
On 11 March, I had planned to join a 10K Road Race in Mekelle, however the date has been changed. Now I will run a 5km Women’s race in Addis Ababa on 1 April as part of my fund-raising for this small and remarkably focussed charity where not a penny is wasted.as part of my fund-raising for this small and remarkably focussed charity where not a penny is wasted. In May 2006 I visited A-CET. I met just a few of the 600 vulnerable children who are supported and mentored by this remarkable charity. A-CET targets particularly vulnerable youngsters, physically or land-mine disabled, civil war or Aids orphans, or ex-street children.
A-CET is also supporting the upgrading of two poor rural schools and have helped to set up three computer training centres for girls. I visited the schools and saw the work in progress. It was an amazing experienced to be greeted by 400 singing and clapping children as their first desks were delivered. Before this they had lesson sitting on the ground.
