Thanks on behalf of Prospect Burma for all the donations. I overcame a cold and a gammy heel on the day and got round the course in 1:34:04 which I'm very pleased with. Now I have to let my blisters heal...
PROSPECT BURMA is an amazing charity which gives young Burmese people access to education. Since 1988 Burmese universities have been progressively dismantled and undermined, leaving the education system in a parlous state. Since the charity's foundation in 1989 they have supported over 1,400 Burmese students. They also fund free English language tuition for desperately poor Burmese refugees in Delhi, a teacher training programme for Burmese in Thailand who in turn train teachers in Burma, and English language courses in Burma.
As a lecturer in a university like SOAS, brimming with diverse and exotic opportunities (like Burmese and Khmer), I'm motivated to try to help students from Burma get themselves into higher education and get the chance to realise their potential. I've supported Prospect Burma for years, and I hope that I can persuade you to donate money to them now - and consider giving money to them on a regular basis.
It's also a charity with star qualities: Daw Aung San Suu Kyi supports them by donating part of the income from her Nobel Peace Prize. Joanna Lumley and Maureen Lipman are also staunch supporters, leading recent Radio 4 appeals.
