Thank you for taking the time to visit our JustGiving page.
Our dad passed away on 20th January 2010 after a 13 month battle with brain cancer, aged 57. There are no words which can do him justice, only that our dad was an amazing man who had a great passion and zest for life and was always happy. He faced his cancer and all other obstacles with such courage and strength. His positive attitude towards life was an inspiration to us all, even during the hard times he ensured that others were looked after.
In December 2008, he was diagnosed with Glioblastoma multiforme (GBM) which is the most common and aggressive type of primary brain tumour in adults. Each year in the UK around 8,500 people are diagnosed with brain and central nervous system tumours. Although the outlook varies greatly between different types of tumour, the current overall survival rates for malignant brain tumours such as GBMs are poor, despite treatment with surgery, chemotherapy and radiotherapy. Glioblastoma patients survive for around 11 months on average, with 14% surviving for five years or more.
There is currently no cure for glioblastoma and although researchers have discovered two genes that appear responsible for the cancer, only 1% of cancer research in the UK is invested in brain tumours, meaning survival rates are low.
Please help us by donating to Brain Tumour Research so that we can better understand the causes of this cancer and to develop new treatments in the hope of finding a cure.
