Story

Hello! Thank you for taking the time to visit me and I know this is a really long page, but I hope you will take the time to read it!

I am running in the Standard Chartered Half-Marathon this December in Singapore.

Never a sportswoman, this 13.1 mile (21.1km) race is by far my toughest physical challenge yet!! Previous to this I have only officially run 3 mile (5 km) races, and I believe before training I can casually run about 4 miles without dying. I have since started my 19 week training and this will include a whooping 75 runs, so this is not so much about the one race in December as it is about going through the gruelling months of training before that. On top of making my fats cry, I hope to use this entire experience to forge some much-needed self-discipline!!

I hope you will support me in this challenge by donating to a cause I am extremely passionate in and which I believe is all too easily overshadowed by more highly-visible causes.

I CAN is the children's communication charity. They provide support and information for children with communication problems, their families and professionals, raise awareness so to ensure these children get picked up and are given the right support, and run two schools for these children in the UK.

There are many children who are underachieving at school because they find it hard to express themselves or understand long instructions, which makes it very hard for them to keep up with the fast pace and complicated instructions given in mainstream classrooms. These children could become withdrawn and/or frustrated which could lead to disengagement at school and them developing emotional and behavioural problems.

Having spent much of an academic year working with one of I CAN's schools, I have seen, first hand, children who used to be underachievers in mainstream school, who were afraid to speak out, who couldn't understand a bit of what was going on in the classroom, become engaged, chatty and most importantly, happy children when given the right support.

This summer I have spent some time working 'behind the scenes' at the I CAN head office and seen the dedication of the team and how they help lost and confused parents access support from relevant professionals.

I guess the point I'm trying to make is that I have worked with I CAN and seen, from the inside, the incredible work they do for a population of often sidelined children with less visible disabilities and, as importantly, giving solutions to overburdened and tired parents and carers. So this means a lot to me, and your contribution will mean a lot to I CAN and the people they support.

I hope you will give generously, and I can assure you I will work very hard for the race too!!

Thank you!!
