Story

Thank you for visiting our fundraising page. Please dig deep and sponsor us online.

We (myself & 13 yr old daughter Emily) have taken this charity to heart and hope to raise as much as possible.  Many of the women we are helping are not far off Emily's age!

Universally, 5% of all pregnant women have complications in labour. In Europe and the USA, where proper medical facilities are available, these women are usually adequately treated.

In Ethiopia, where there are inadequate medical facilities, these women (often young girls with under developed pelvises) have a difficult, or perhaps an obstructed labour, maybe lasting several days leading to a stillborn child, which causes a vaginal fistula (a hole) in either the bladder or rectum, leaving them incontinent in one or two respects. It also causes tissue damage, infection and possible damage to the limbs. It is lifelong, and untreated the woman becomes an outcast in her society  because of her offensive smell. She is abandoned by her husband, family & village facing a lifetime of incapacity & degradation. Many patients are illiterate and without independent means of economic support. As such, they are often left to lead a lonely, lonely life, sometimes not knowing that there might be a cure, or that they may be able to avail themselves to it without charge.

It is a human problem on a large scale due to two main factors:

1) Lack of trained doctors in this field and the associated medical facilities, and 2) The dramatic terrain in Ethiopia which makes communication difficult. 75% of the population lives, on average, 2½ days walk from an all-weather road.

Dr Hamlin & her trained staff established the Fistula Hospital in Addis Ababa and are opening other hospitals to help other women. It is an extraordinary charity.

Please help us and contribute to the Hamlin Churchill Childbirth Injuries Fund which supports the Fistula Hospital.

Donating through this site is simple, fast and totally secure. It is also the most efficient way to sponsor me: Hamlin Churchill Childbirth Injuries Fund will receive your money faster and, if you are a UK taxpayer, an extra 28% in tax will be added to your gift at no cost to you.

Many thanks for your support.
