Story
Hey,
thank you for visiting our site.
All money raised through this site to celebrate our marriage will go to the Refugee Law Project, a Ugandan organization working to ensure the human rights of refugees, asylum seekers and internally displaced persons in Uganda.
The money will be used specifically to provide a free internet, computer and information service for refugees in Uganda.
Most refugees in Uganda are from the Democratic Republic of Congo, Somalia, Sudan, Rwanda, Burundi, Ethiopia and Eritrea. They have experienced war, violence, torture and the loss of close family members and community. They live in extreme poverty in Uganda.
Very few refugees in Uganda can afford to use commercial internet services or mobile phones. They are unable to communicate with relatives in their home countries or those who have been resettled overseas. As a result, refugees lose contact with spouses, siblings, parents and children they have become separated from in fleeing from their home country, and are unable to trace their whereabouts or know whether they are alive and well. This results in greater isolation and distress.
It is very difficult for refugees to follow events in their home countries, as they do not have access to television or foreign newspapers. They cannot keep track of whether their families and communities are safe, or if there has been any change in the situation from which they fled.
Unemployment in Uganda is extremely high, and refugees find it very difficult to find work other than occasional petty or labouring work, which can pay as little as 60 US cents / day. Training and employment opportunities are almost non-existent.
The internet service at Refugee Law Project will provide computer stations with internet for free use by refugees.
Refugees will be able to use the internet service to stay in touch with family and friends in their home countries and overseas. There are also numerous free online educational courses for those, like refugees, who do not have financial means. Refugee Law Project will coordinate groups of refugees undertaking these courses and assist refugees searching for information about organizations that could sponsor their education in Uganda.
Refugee Law Project will also assist refugees using computers to prepare documents such as letters, reports and CVs, and help refugees with training in key computer skills such as Word, email and using the internet for research purposes.
Please visit Refugee Law Project's site for more information about the organization. All money used through this site will be transferred directly by their partner in the UK, Amera, and will be used for setting up the free computer and internet service. Once the service is up and running, we will posts photos of it in operation and updates on its use for everyone who has supported it.
Many thanks!
