When my husband, Ralph, was diagnosed with cancer in 2005, our world was turned upside down. Fortunately with determination and the best medical care, the future is now looking much brighter. Experts are not really sure why, but cases of head and neck cancer are on the increase. It used to be associated with heavy drinking or smoking but now many cases have no significant associated risk factors, as was the situation with Ralph.
Heads Up is an Appeal under the umbrella of the Oxford Radcliffe Hospitals Charitable Funds that has been set up to fund research into head and neck cancers, including those of the mouth, throat and voice box www.heads-up.org.uk. In July 2007, Heads Up was able to appoint their first Research Scientist, Stephan Feller, who began work at the Weatherall Institute of Molecular Medicine close to the John Radcliffe Hospital in Oxford.
The challenge now is to keep funding that research and in time to appoint a team to work under Stephan. To meet that objective Heads Up needs to raise £80,000 over the next twelve months.
The Appeal has been allocated a place in the 2008 London Marathon under the Silver Bond scheme and will not qualify for a similar place until 2013. When deciding how much to donate, please make it fives year’s worth!
Thanks in anticipation for your donation, the generosity of my sponsors never ceases to amaze me.
Many thanks, Karen
