INCA TRAIL HIGH ALITUDE CHALLENGE · 9 September 2008

We support thousands of people living with terminal illnesses & their families, in our three hospices, via our patient & family support services, and in the community through Myton at Home. We need to raise £12.7 million this year to provide our services free of charge – we can’t do it without you!

Thanks for visiting my fundraising page.

Donating through Justgiving is quick, easy and totally secure. It’s also the most efficient way to sponsor me: Myton Hamlet Hospice Trust gets your money faster and, if you’re a UK taxpayer, Justgiving makes sure 25% in Gift Aid, plus a 3% supplement, are added to your donation.

What is my motivation for doing this?  Read on!

As many of you already know, this particular branch of the Pettigrew Clan returned to the UK in September 2004, after my husband, Bill, was diagnosed and treated for cancer in Spain.  Not having unpacked or settled into our new home in Wellesbourne Warwickshire, and the children beginning at their new school, we received the devastating news that Bill had become seriously ill again.

Bill died at Myton Hospice in December 2004 and the children (Kirsty then 9 and Jaime 7 years old) and I were left reeling.  Luckily, and in addition to the wonderful care that Bill had received at Myton Hospice, I was told about Rainbow Ripples, a childrens support and bereavement counselling service that the hospice supports, and which is open to all children who have a member of the family who is terminally ill or has died at Myton.  Rainbow Ripples were able to help prepare the children for the death of their father and at the same time support me.  The children are offered one to one counselling during their bereavement and are invited to Weekend Workshops which are held three times a year.  The Workshop is a place where they can express themselves genuinely because they know that everyone there has experienced a loss like theirs.  They are helped thorugh organised activities together with fun and games, which enhances friendhsip and enables them to share experiences.  I also have the opportunity to meet other parents and share experiences.

Wishing to give something back for the help and support my family had received, I decided last year to tackle the challenge of undertaking a High Altitude walk along the Inca Trail in Peru – not just a slightly difficult walk high in the mountains but, with the altitude and my asthma, a serious challenge to my breathing!

Training well underway for last October – but not to be! Our family received a serious setback in July last year when our home was visited by our little River Dene and we, like many others in the village, found ourselves homeless and our lives in disarray.  With the fundraising project on hold, I managed to rent a house and remain in Wellesbourne, finally returning to our own home in February this year.

Having expected to have to forfeit my walk, I was delighted to learn that I could still undertake my fundraising challenge in November this year and I've been training hard ever since....and let me tell you it is hard work!

PLEASE support me and help raise funds for the wonderful facility that we have on our doorstep that is Myton Hospice!
