The Fostering Network - Sahara Trek · 17 April 2009

We are the UK’s leading fostering charity and the essential network for fostering. We support foster carers, fostering services and the wider sector to transform children’s lives. We work to ensure all fostered children and young people get the best possible care and experience stable family life.

Story

Hi All, thanks for visiting my fundrasing page

I faced the Sahara challenge with such great support and encouragement from so many that I felt humbled that all I had to do was walk . . . but walk I did, with 4 camels and 4 locals our guide, the cook, the camel man and a fourth man we called gofer as he spent the whole week going to look for camels, provisions, water, tents, candles, tea, food . . .

I was a little wary when I realised that the full weeks food provisions where sitting on the back of one of those smelly, obnoxious camels and there was no direct translation for ‘is it refrigerated’ in the Arabic language! I was even more alarmed when the guide asked me if I had any first aid training and on inspection of the first aid kit the most useful item in there seemed to be a tampon! It was then I realised I needed to stop thinking so much and, in the words of Nike, Just Do It.

I was fascinated, enthralled and surprised at the diverse landscape, all of it barren but all so different.

How our cook produced such wonderful meals from slowly decaying ingredients and a calour gas ring I have no idea, maybe I was just so tired and hungry at the end of the day that it did not matter . . . After one particularly odious day of sand dune walking he even managed to produce eggs and chips - 4 days out of civilisation and we devoured them like a Michelin starred meal!

There are many, many memories and stories all crammed into a seven day trip, far to many to mention in a newsletter or see in photographs. I just know that if fundraising, changing lives, influencing policies and all the other work we endeavour to do at the Fostering Network was as straight forward as walking 130 km across the Sahara we would all be champions!

Many thanks Karen
