Guildford to Paris Bike ride · 11 September 2010

Project Peru is a small, lively, totally voluntary charity with minimal overheads offering food, clothes, shelter, education, health, and fun to the children from extreme poverty who live in their refuge in the desert shanty towns of Lima, and in the local community. www.projectperu.org.uk

Story

Hola amigos.

¡Bienvenidos! Welcome to our justgiving page. Whether you are visiting to sponsor us for the bike ride or because you are interested in the efforts of Project Peru, we welcome you!

Three years ago I was part of a volunteer team with Project Peru, working with local builders in Las Laderas, one of the poorest shanty towns in Lima, Peru, helping to build a centre for children in emergency situations. A town, built entirely on a landfill (please see the added photos).

Now, thanks to Project Peru, the building is complete and currently has 22 children, all in desperate circumstances, being cared for until a permanent home can be found for them. This building is also a hub for those in need and it holds daily homework clubs, support groups for the ‘third age’, serves as a meeting place, advice centre and a safe haven for many of the most vulnerable. Most of the more than 66,000 people who live in this community have no access to water and electricity; many lack the funds to go to school, and most, often single mothers, struggle to find even the most low paid jobs.

In 2009 they built a new soup kitchen and nursery in the upper zone of Las Laderas. Project Peru is also funding a refuge high in the Andes. Funds are so desperately still needed.

The wooff clan (Georgia, Clare and myself) have decided to go on a much longer sunny cycle ride from Guildford to Paris. We will raise funds so that Project Peru can go on helping in the local community and so that their own refuge, (in Zapallal) can go on offering a permanent home to children from extreme poverty. All sponsorship you donate goes directly to fund their work in Peru, as the charity runs with minimal overheads, and by the way we are all paying for our own costs during our time on the road.

Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page.
