Not being much of a runner, and not actually liking running very much, I don't know what came over me late last year when I thought it would be a really good idea to set myself the goal of running Brighton's first ever marathon. There have been many moments of reflection, usually when I'm being hailed or snowed on, where I have questioned this rather rash decision but I'm in it now and I'm going to do it.
Since the New Year I have run two half marathons and completed a long run every Sunday without fail as part of my training schedule. I have a fantastic bunch of running buddies, a supportive family and the ever encouraging instructors from British Military Fitness behind me so I know that I'll be able to do it. Along the way I have discovered the importance of lucky pants, go faster bacon sandwiches and the superiority of Fruit Pastilles over Jelly Babies. I have also found that there is no area of the body immune from chafing but no discomfort that can't be endured with the help of a bit of hilarious banter and some heavy duty lipstick. I have also discovered that it is best to keep one's knickers on whilst trying the apply Ralgex to aching leg muscles.
I'm running this marathon to raise funds for Make-A-Wish-Foundation UK, the charity that grants wishes to children and young people with life-threatening and life-limiting illnesses. I'd like to think that for every grimace on my face throughout my training and on the day itself, I'd be helping to put a smile on a small person's face. For every £50 we raise, we can give a child a day out at a fire or police station with his/her own special uniform, or for £200 we can fund a therapeutic swim in the sea with dolphins for a child who wishes to go to Florida.
So my own wish, apart from never having to do another marathon ever again, is to raise £500 for this charity. I'd be ever so grateful if you could help me achieve this. Also, it has been my birthday this week and as I am in the extremely fortunate position of not really needing or wanting anything material, a donation in lieu of a present would be very welcome.
