Story
Thank you for visiting my JustGiving page. Please read on to find out why Macmillan Cancer Support is important to me.
After my mum’s first chemotherapy session, shortly after her diagnosis of pancreatic cancer was confirmed, my mum and dad were given the opportunity to have a MacMillan nurse assigned to them, which they decided to accept.
They found their MacMillan nurse, Bethan, to be very caring, sympathetic and supportive. Bethan provided a much-needed and convenient liason between them and the hospital, visited about once a week or so, and always listened closely to my mum’s concerns, offering helpful suggestions about medication, practical and financial issues. In the January of 2012 when my mum’s symptoms were causing her considerable distress, Bethan was able to make immediate arrangements for her to spend a few days in St Kentigern Hospice where staff would quickly make her more comfortable and help ensure she had the right medication to manage her pain as effectively as possible.
We were extremely grateful for the support of our Macmillan nurse. One in three of us will have cancer at some point in our lives, and the information, advice and support of Macmillan nurses, like Bethan, are hugely important in helping guide us through the complexities of the system. They are trained and experienced registered nurses with at least two years experience in cancer or palliative care; they complete specialist courses in managing pain and other symptoms, and in psychological support. The support of these fantastic professionals is provided completely free of charge to patients and their families.
