Story

Thanks for taking the time to visit our JustGiving page.

After having to retire from rugby due to persistant knee injuries and arthritis Andy needed to find a new challenge and a way to push himself to the extreme. Jesse, being a fit 40 'something' and recently retired rugby player also craved a new activity that would ensure he was tested once again.

And so Andy, along with Jesse, himself an ex-Navy serviceman are takling on this challenge to really test themselves in what will be a completely different environment to their 'normal' rugby atmosphere. Quite simpley they are training outside their comfort zone in a bid to acheive what they see as the first of many 'challenges' to come.

An obvious affiliation with rugby and having close friends invovled with the forces Andy & Jesse wanted to not only help raise some vital funds for Rugby for Heroes but also test themselves in a new extreme that would enable them to see what their bodies could still do.

And so "The Kayak 100" was born. 100 miles of The River Wye in just 4 days. Starting at Glasbury, Hereford and working through calm waters, fast currents and tough rapids with a camp on the riverside each night until morning, this will certainly require every hour of their 10 month training schedule to get them in the best possible shape (no jokes please!)

“Rugby for Heroes” itself was formed by a group of professional rugby players who wanted to show their support for our servicemen and women, this is a cause that most players & supporters hold in high regard.

The mission of Rugby for Heroes is:

  • To raise funds to help those who have suffered traumatic times back into training and finding new careers.
  • Mentoring and inspiring our heroes with players as buddies
  • Support training to help resettle, rehabilitate and motivate back into daily life
  • Amateur rugby community network for local involvement, coaching opportunities, social and community support
  • Summer camps only for military families
  • Raising awareness through public sporting events.

Come and see us off at Glasbury, cheer us along the way or even be there at the end to watch us cross the finish line in Chepstow. Any support is most welcome even if it's to just to bring them chocolate!!
