My story

Thanks for visiting my fundraising page.

Yes, it's me again.  Just when you thought it was safe to put your wallet and credit card away, here's me popping up like a bad penny (ooh, sorry, pun not intended!), asking for sponsorship for a very worthy cause - and for something that's very close to my heart - The Blackpool Illumathon in aid of The Trinity Hospice - a fantastic place that I cannot speak highly enough of.

The Hospice has a very special place in my heart for lots of reasons.  When it first opened and needed funding, it was my late husband Bob who spearheaded the campaign through his newspaper, The Citizen, where he was Group Managing Editor.  Little did we know that, years later, he would need it's care from when he was diagnosed with cancer through to his untimely death.

Although he was never admitted into the Hospice, he did receive first class care from one of its nurses at home.  Helen became a family friend and, believe me, it was wonderful to know that she was just on the other end of the phone whenever we needed her.  She talked to our two sons to explain the visible changes they would see in Bob and also helped prepare them for the inevitable.  I will always be very grateful to this wonderful lady as she was with Bob and I at the moment he passed away - I just don't know what I would have done without her support over the following couple of hours.

The Hospice doesn't just provide palliative care; indeed my boys both had bereavement counselling via The Linden Centre, which they said they found invaluable. Rick, being 17 at the time, had one to one sessions whereas Rob, then 13, enjoyed the group sessions offered through Cascade.  He was amazed how he was able to talk about his feelings and frustrations through play and also how many other children of similar age were experiencing the same as him.  Although it is now coming up for four years since they lost their dad, the Trinity is still there for them - you are not forgotten with the passing of time.

So now you know why I want to raise as much as I can for Trinity Hospice.  Training is well underway as I'd like to be able to boast a decent finishing time.

The walk starts at midnight on Saturday 5 September and, to mark this event, the council are keeping the illuminiations switched on for us.  We will even have soldiers from The Duke of Lancaster's 4th Battalion strategically placed en route to keep spirits high if anyone starts flagging.  And what's more, they'll be making us all a bacon buttie at the end!!  What better way to spend a Saturday night/Sunday morning!  Fingers crossed for a dry night (I mean rain, not booze!).

Donating through Justgiving is quick, easy and totally secure. It’s also the most efficient way to sponsor me: The Brian Wyers Memorial Fund Ltd gets your money faster and, if you’re a UK taxpayer, Justgiving makes sure 25% in Gift Aid, plus a 3% supplement, are added to your donation.

So please sponsor me now - help me reach my target and keep the fundraising that Bob started for Trinity going.    Thank you.
