Hi my name is Kelly Chiswick and a few years ago I decided that I was going to turn my life around. I was overweight and depressed. I tried all the diets going but could not stick to any, I decided that I was going to start eating sensibly and start exercising I began to change my life habits in June 2007 and continued my healthy living regime, I lost a total of 7 stone 2 lb and hit my target weight in March 2008. My goal had always been to run the London Marathon and help raise money for a charity that meant something to me. After I had reached my weight loss target I underwent surgery to remove excess skin I had from my tummy, hips and thighs, my first 2 surgeries were brilliant, I then had a thigh reduction in March 2009 unfortunately I developed Seromas on both thighs, which are pockets under the skin that fill with serous fluid to protect the body when any trauma occurs. My Seromas got so large that in April 2009 the one on my right side burst open and I got an infection in it which led to septicaemia. I was in a High dependency unit critically ill with blood poisoning. I pulled through and have had infection after infection and been to theatre a further 4 times. I had to have vacuum drains in my legs for 8 weeks during the summer to help my legs repair and remove the seromas but unfortunately that did not work. I then had a haematoma and had to be opened up again. This time the right leg began to repair and the seroma went although I still have a small haematoma in my right thigh which will go over time. I was still having my left seroma drained up to twice a week and having up to 510ml removed at a time, which I am sure as you can imagine it was not only extremely painful at times but very uncomfortable, and even stopping me from walking and getting clothes on. But my surgeon at the Queen Victoria hospital in East Grinstead never gave up on making my leg better, he was such a huge help to me and was there when ever I needed him, even giving me his mobile phone number to contact him if I ever need to, which I did on many occasions and don't know what I would of done sometimes without him. I have just recently undergone further surgery to remove my Seroma and all is looking great. I owe a huge thank you to my consultant in plastics and burns Mr B Dheansa and his team and all the nurses at the Queen Victoria Hospital for looking after me so many times.
Whilst being at the QVH I met so many people old and young whom had undergone skin graphs and whom had been burnt and needed specialist help to help there wounds heal. This is my reason for running for The Blond McIndoe Research Foundation to give something back to the hospital that has had such an impact in on my life, and helped me fulfil my dreams.
I want to also say a massive thank you to Paulo at the Roko Gym club in Gillingham for the help and support given to both myself and my good friend Gina Bayliss to enable us to reach our targets and complete the London Marathon. Gina is running with me to help raise the money needed which is £3000 between us and to support me for my chosen charity in the Virgin London Marathon on the 25th April 2010.
So much help is needed at the QVH to make sure the research can continue in exploring wound healing with particular reference to burns and children's scalds. This Foundation does not receive any help from the government or the NHS. So please please give as much as you can to make mine and many others dreams come true.
