On , Hannah Brack, Rebecca Semmens and Bianca Davies plan to embark on a challenge of a lifetime…
Kilimanjaro is the highest freestanding mountain in the world with rising to 5,895 m. There are several different routes up the mountain but we have decided to take the Lemosho route. The challenge will involve trekking through a range of eco-systems (rainforest to ice-caps).
The trek will begin in the rainforests of Lemosho Glades then we will make our way up towards Shira Plateau. From here we will continue on the Southern Flank, Barranco Wall and and then up to the summit.
During the trek we will be walking 6-8 hours a day except for the summit day when we will be walking for 12-15 hours. The trek itself will take 8 days to allow us time to acclimatise properly to increase our chances of reaching the summit.
The challenge is considered to be extreme and requires a very good level of fitness. During each night of the trek we will be camping in a remote mountain environment where the facilities will be basic. We will also have to contend with the unpredictable weather as well as the usual extreme fluctuations in temperature. There is also the risk of Acute Mountain Sickness due to being at high altitude.
Our chosen charity is Cornwall Hospice Care. The charity provides care and support throughout Cornwall, for people living with life-threatening illnesses, their families and carers, not only in their two hospices - St Julia’s in Hayle and Mt Edgcumbe in St Austell - but also in outreach centres across the county.
The trek is being funded through corporate sponsorship; therefore every penny raised will go straight to Cornwall Hospice Care.
