Story

Hello – and thank you for visiting my JustGiving page.

I have been keen to get involved with a charity for a while and am delighted to have been given the opportunity to combine this ambition with my love of the mountains as a volunteer with Snow-Camp (registered charity number: 1101030  www.snow-camp.co.uk)

WHY?

Snow-Camp is a youth charity providing disadvantaged young people from London’s inner city areas with the chance to experience mountain sports.  The aim is to remove kids from the often inactive or dangerous lives that befall many of them on London’s urban estates, by providing them the chance to develop their social and professional future through skiing and snowboarding.

The charity hopes to expand this substantially in the next few years by extending its coverage to all London boroughs and then moving into other major cities in England.

As well as offering the opportunity to learn to ski or snowboard during a week’s stay in the Alps, Snow-Camp includes a daily informal and creative life-skills course designed to enable young people to reflect on the key issues that impact their lives.  This year we are helping 220 young people who would otherwise never get the chance to visit the mountains and they need our support.

I, along with 20 other volunteers, am giving a week of my time in early April to help these young people during this amazing opportunity.  Alongside the experience of their day on the mountain, the other activities and time away from home pressures will allow them to reflect on their experiences of life to date, consider their potential, value and skills and focus their sights on what they can achieve in the future, regardless of their potentially difficult home situations.

Just to re-assure you, it is not a “jolly” for the volunteers – we’re on duty from breakfast until bedtime and will be helping the young people through home sickness, beginner skiing lessons, being in a foreign country for the first time, coping with the language barrier and generally supporting them in every aspect of the trip – as well as spending much of the week on the nursery slopes – but I can’t wait!!   Wish me luck…

HOW MUCH?

Snow-Camp needs your support to continue to offer the Snow-Camp experience to more and more inner-city young people.  It costs around £500 for each young person to attend a Snow-Camp week and they are asked to fundraise £99 each in order to attend.  By donating, you will help make a real difference to disadvantaged young people and give them an experience that will significantly impact their lives.

Please donate whatever you feel you can – and if you donate £500 or more, Snow-Camp will open up a bursary in your name. Click here for more detail on what that means.

Please feel free to forward this on to any people or companies you feel may wish to support this amazing charity.

Thank you,

Kerry
