At 5,896 meters high, Mount Kilimanjaro is the highest freestanding mountain in the world. Our challenge is, as the Kili Klic, to reach Uhuru peak, the highest summit of Mount Kilimanjaro.

Climbing Kilimanjaro will be difficult. The most quoted line is that it is "more painful than childbirth" ... and this from women who have done both!

When people speak of this degree of difficulty, they are mainly referring to one single part of the climb, which is the six to eight hour section up to the summit. This part will be really tough, mainly due to the extreme altitude.

The main issue on the mountain is altitude sickness as Kilimanjaro is seriously high. No other trekking below 5000m altitude can prepare us for this. Almost all climbers suffer some form of mild to medium altitude sickness. Approximately 15% suffer symptoms severe enough to warrant their immediate removal to lower altitudes. Up to 1 in 100 of all climbers requires emergency evacuation – hopefully we won’t be one of them!

Kilimanjaro contains an example of virtually every ecosystem on earth - glacier, snowfields, deserts, alpine moorland, savannah, and tropical jungle, all of which are found on the mountain.

It’s going to be an amazing experience with lots of highs and lows but we're climbing with a great bunch of people, and doing some intense training to ensure we have the best possible chance of making it to the summit and more than that we can’t wait to do it!

There will be twelve of us climbing for a great cause – Schools for Kenya in association with the Born Free Foundation – we are aiming to raise, as a group, £85,000 to build a secondary school for the children of the Amboseli region. Kenyan children are only educated for eight years and after that it stops, so we are doing all we can to ensure their education continues so they may break away from the poverty, poaching and deprivation that is so prevalent in this part of the world. Not only do these schools benefit the children they educate, they benefit whole communities which includes fresh drinking water and recreational facilities – a worthy cause wouldn’t you agree and all of the money reaised will go directly to the charity as we are funding the actual climb ourselves.

So please, dig deep and sponsor us to climb the world’s highest freestanding mountain. Any amount from £1 to £1,000 – or even more! – will be gratefully received, every little helps just please donate.

A GREAT BIG THANKS – watch this space for “us at the summit” photos!
