Story
Thank you for visiting our fundraising page. Please dig deep and sponsor us online.
Donating through this site is simple, fast and totally secure. It is also the most efficient way to sponsor us: The African Medical and Research Foundation (AMREF UK) will receive your money faster and, if you are a UK taxpayer, an extra 28% in tax will be added to your gift at no cost to you.
In 2006 we are challenging ourselves to climb the highest free standing mountain in the World and the highest mountain in Africa, Mount Kilimanjaro in Tanzania, as well as cycling from Lands End to John O'Groats (LEJOG) to raise money for AMREF. More details on the two expeditions are shown below.
AMREF is the largest African health development organisation in the World. AMREF's vision is a healthy Africa, free from poverty. AMREF works with underprivileged communities in Africa to achieve this goal, and to bring lasting solutions to the health problems they face. Their six areas of focus are:
1. HIV/AIDS, TB and Sexually Transmitted Diseases
2. Malaria
3. Safe Water and Basic Sanitation
4. Family Health
5. Clinical Services, Disaster Management and Emergency Response
6. Training and Health Learning Materials
Together with local communities, governments and partners, AMREF provides local people with skills and knowledge they need to build their own health care systems.
In this way, AMREF helps African communities take responsibility for their health, creating long term improvements in African health. AMREF is headquartered in Nairobi, Kenya, and runs programmes in Ethiopia, Kenya, Rwanda, Somalia, South Africa, Sudan, Tanzania and Uganda.
The Kilimanjaro Challenge is taking place over eleven days in September 2006 and involves reaching the summit of Mount Kilimanjaro at Uhuru Point (5896m) by the Machame route. to find out more about the trips and to see how our training is going. The website also includes more information about AMREF and exactly how your money will be spent. For example, a small donation of could teach a small community how to prevent trachoma, a major cause of blindness in Africa, and a donation of £50 could pay for a life-saving operation for one patient through AMREF's Clinical Outreach Programme.
So please sponsor us now! If possible please leave a donation instead of a pledge so AMREF get your money straight away and can put it to good use.
Many thanks for your support.
