Story

I've decided to join my brother Chris in his 2013 Kilimanjaro climb, to help raise funds for and awareness of Kick4Life's work in Lesotho. I did think £3,900 is an impossible amount to raise, but I have a plan and am excited!

Kick4Life (www.kick4life.org) are establishing and delivering a development model using sport as a faciltator to help address challenges around HIV/AIDS, employment and education.

I'm focusing my own efforts on one of K4L's newest schemes; the 'ReCYCLE programme'. K4L's new social enterpise is a weekly waste collection service powered by Orphans and Vulnerable Children (OVCs) using bicycles and trailers to collect recyclables from subscribing customers.

While this scheme promotes recycling in the capital Maseru, and provides disadvantaged youth with an opportunity to generate income for school fees, books, uniforms, shoes and other basic living costs; by nature it also helps promote cycling as a way of getting about.

This third benefit interests me as a transport planner by profession, and after visiting Lesotho in 2009 and learning that the second biggest killer after AIDS in this country is down to the car. I believe that the development of a country and its people, whether in the UK or Lesotho, should also involve the development of multiple ways of getting about, as opposed to just the car.

I believe this a positive movement supporting the development of young people and a unique country. I aim to support this by raising money in a number of ways, while promoting sustainable travel here in the UK! (and by climbing Kilimanjaro with Chris).

The Kilmanjaro bit is obviously something I'll enjoy immensely and benefit from hugely, so over the next 18 months I'll be donating the part of the £3,900 that goes towards that. The rest (what anyone else donates) will go directly to K4L's work.
