Event: MAG - Community Challenge Cambodia 2010, on 25 November 2010
We clear landmines and destroy weapons to save and improve lives worldwide.

Story

Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page.

And thanks for getting this far. Please give generously and help me raise money for a great cause.

In November 2010, I'll be going to Cambodia on a charity challenge organised by the Mines Advisory Group (MAG), a Nobel Peace prize-winning NGO based in Manchester.  MAG is a humanitarian organisation which clears landmines and the remnants of conflicts around the world, saving lives and building futures for often very poor communities.

Cambodia is one of the most heavily mined countries in the world. MAG has been working in Cambodia since 1992, clearing landmines from both the Vietnam War (1959-1975) and the Cambodian-Vietnamese War (1975-1989). There are still around four to six million landmines in Cambodia, and since 2001, 5000 Cambodian people have been reported as maimed or killed by weapons left behind by war.

Which brings me to my challenge: for about two weeks, I'll be going with a group of MAG volunteers to trek, camp and build new homes for landmine survivors in a rural village. The houses we build will be blessed by buddhist monks in a really special ceremony.

Anyone who knows me is aware that camping, roughing it and DIY are not my strong points, so challenge really is the operative word! Please ease my pain (in advance) by donating generously.  I need to raise at least £3,000 but it would be great to raise more.

The money I raise breaks down like this: of the £3000 sponsorship target, £1595 is the cost of my place on the event. This includes around £150-£200 which pays for the houses and building materials and the rest pays for flights, maila, support crew etc.  The remaining amount goes directly to MAG to be used as unrestricted funds for their programmes.

So please give what you can. Plus, keep an eye out for all the fundraising events I'll be running in 2010 - I'm hoping that everyone I know will give something, however small, time, money, prizes, support.

Thanks a lot and keep in touch.

About the charity

Every single day, 15 people are killed or injured because of landmines and other explosive weapons. Half of all civilian casualties are children. MAG finds and destroys these weapons to save lives and rebuild futures; helping people to grow crops, attend school and build homes.
