Thank you very much for visiting our JustGiving page!
If you're here then you probably know this... but Kipriory is a cultural link project between Kipriria Academy, in western Kenya, and The Priory School in England.
The project was started in 2008 by Joanne Dwyer and George Tarus, former teaching colleagues at Kipriria from Jo's time volunteering at the school with Africa & Asia Venture (AV). Its aims are to:
- Raise students' aspirations
- Build cultural awareness and understanding
- Begin an inter-cultural dialogue
Please visit our website for more information about the project and The Priory's recent visit to Kipriria www.kipriory.com
The project wishes to support education at Kipriria, a school so full of life and potential but with very few opportunities. We are fundraising for a new library (the current library is housed in a small storeroom and the new one will be in the old school hall) to give Kipriria's students a place to study, a chance to read for pleasure, and for them and their teachers to have access to a wider range of books and resources.
The cost of purchasing these books (both fiction and non-fiction as well as readers specific to the Kenyan curriculum) and furniture such as tables and chairs, is £5,000. Everything will be bought in either Nairobi or the nearby city of Eldoret.
We hope to involve the local community and recruit volunteers to help look after the library. They would be free to use it as well and it could be used as a space to team teach and all kinds!
Kipriory's motto is 'one-step-at-a-time' and your generosity and support for a small thing that isn't so small would mean so much, and be of huge benefit, to Kipriria's children and community. Whatever you are able to give would be welcome!
Every single penny raised here will be ear marked specifically for Kipriory's library and will go straight to this cause through the AV Foundation (www.avfoundation.org), a registered charity and part of Africa & Asia Venture which works with ex-volunteers on educational projects in the countries and communities in which they served. The AV Foundation has no administration costs and has kindly taken Kipriory under its wing to enable us to use this facility and make it easier for us to recieve donations.
We will keep you updated on the library's progress.
With thanks and kind wishes,
The Kipriory Team
